November 2014 Newsletter: Teaching Handwriting to Students with Autism

11/24/2014

Some students with autism may display difficulties with handwriting. Possible reasons for this may relate to sensory processing and motor planning. Dysgraphia (which is not necessarily experienced by a person with autism) refers to difficulties in fine motor control that can result in poor handwriting skills. These difficulties can occur despite strong learning skills in other areas.

Some students may also be less intrinsically motivated to participate in writing activities, so making these activities more motivating may be helpful.

This month, we'll share articles, activities, and resources to make writing more motivating and fun to your children or students with autism. Although not necessarily specifically related to autism, we will also share some information and resources about dysgraphia.

Former College Athlete Shares Autism Experiences to Eliminate Bullying
November 15, 2014
http://fox8.com/2014/11/15/former-college-athlete-works-to-eliminate-bullying/

Great quote from the article: Ianni summed up his message with these three letters: L-Y-D. “These three letters guys stand for these three words: Live your dreams. That’s exactly what I encourage each and every single one of you to do for the rest of your life — and achieve every single goal that you have set. “Because at the end of the day guys, we don’t dream our lives — we live our dreams,” he said.

Reading and Copywork for Kids Who Love Trains

11/21/2014

This pack includes 35 reading activities, 12 copy work pages (for handwriting practice), and a train-themed token economy set.

This book of activities and lessons is designed to provide you, as a teacher or parent, with reading and writing activities that motivate your child or students to learn. When we build children’s interests into our lessons and learning activities, children are more naturally motivated to complete the work.

This book is written for children who have an understanding of letters and which sounds they make and that have a special interest in trains. In my years of teaching special education, many of my students (particularly those with autism) have been very interested in trains. Using train-themed learning activities has been highly motivating for my students, helping them focus on their work with less struggle and distraction and more fun and enjoyment. The illustrations are designed to be simple, so as to provide a visual cue without distracting the student.
