Who Should Use It? All About Reading is often used as a homeschool reading curriculum, but can be used in schools and can be a good fit for ABA programs and centers (more about ABA programs below).
What's Included? There are five levels (kits) of the program (pre-reading and levels 1 – 4), and each kit contains slightly different resources and materials. Generally, each kit contains: teacher's manual, student manual, leveled readers, magnetic letter tiles, and flash cards with a divided storage box. Specific contents of each kit can be found on the All About Reading website: http://allaboutlearningpress.net/go.php?id=1079_2_1_35
About the All About Reading Program: All About Reading is an easy-to-use and engaging reading curriculum. It is a scripted program, so it tells the parent or teacher exactly what to say and do with the materials for each lesson, making it almost effortless. Examples of the activities in the lessons are using the letter tiles to build and read words, reading words in the context of fun activities, such as “feeding” cut-out pieces of paper “cheese” (with words printed on the back) to a paper mouse, reviewing words with flashcards, and reading aloud from the leveled readers. The leveled readers that come with the program are excellent. My students have enjoyed the stories and the illustrations are high-quality.
How Much Time Do We Work on All About Reading Daily? I used about two lessons daily (usually one lesson was an activity and one lesson was reading a story in the leveled reader), plus the recommended time that the parent or teacher reads aloud to the student.
All About Reading for ABA Programs: Like Shiller Math, what makes All About Reading helpful for ABA programs is the fact that it is easy to use, scripted, and there is minimal adult prep needed for each lesson. There is some cutting out of materials that needs to be done for many of the lessons, but overall the program can be easily picked up and used by an ABA therapist without additional training, since it is scripted. If the student needs repetition of any lessons, the materials that were cut out and prepared can be used again, since most lessons don’t use materials (like worksheets) that the student writes on.
